Canada’s greatest literary bar band The Weakerthans have recorded a live session now available over at iTunes.
The set includes five great evocative songs stripped down and played with intimacy by the tour seasoned band. There is a surprising version of the song "Anchorless" from the 1999 Fallow album played with a drum machine and what seems to be some sort of cheap keyboard and it sounds amazing - seriously. The session was recorded at Metal Works studio in Mississauga Ontario and includes three tracks from the recent Night Windows and two off of 1999’s Fallow.

Then it's me and Jim in a predicament involving the van and trailer stuck in snow and ice as we attempt to dig our way out of a worsening mess. Tragedy and comedy ensue. To cap it off, I leave you with an introduction to my "high-deas" category on my phone as a final "thought."

“There’s no doubt that Frank Turner is the most exciting and talented anti-folk troubadour in the country” – Big Cheese
June 8, 2009 – Los Angeles, CA – English folk-punk singer-songwriter Frank Turner will tour the US with The Gaslight Anthem this fall in support of his forthcoming album, Poetry of the Deed, due out in September. In anticipation of the new album, Epitaph Records/Xtra Mile will be reissuing Turner’s critically acclaimed album Love Ire & Song on July 21.
Described as possessing the “heavy-clever wit and wry, do-or-die romantic solidarity of socially superconscious singer-songwriter Billy Bragg by way of Joe Strummer” (Austin Chronicle), Turner has emerged as one of the UK’s most prolific singer-songwriters of the past decade. His sophomore album, Love Ire & Song, “fourteen tracks, 500 emotions, three chords, and the truth” (Austin Chronicle), has been called “as defiantly brilliant as ever” (NME) and “so personal and unique that it will never be able to be mimicked by anyone” (Westword).
And that is only the beginning. Poetry of the Deed promises to be his best work yet…
Turner’s fiery passion translates in his live show with spine tingling vigor and honesty. “His songs are deeply personal, his lyrics evocative and gut-wrenching. No veiled references. Everything means exactly what it sounds like it means. He sings with all his heart, body and soul” (MercuryNews.com). Turner will tour with The Offspring at the end of June and with The Gaslight Anthem beginning September. Don’t miss one of the most talented singer-songwriter’s around today.

Previously released in the UK, the album will be available for the first time in the US, just in time for the band’s run on this summer’s Vans Warped Tour.

Pop-Punk’s Hottest Band To Release This Will Be The Death Of Us On July 21
June 2, 2009 – Los Angeles, CA – Bay Area pop-punk band Set Your Goals will release their widely anticipated new album This Will Be The Death Of Us on July 21 via Epitaph Records. Produced by Mike Green (Paramore, The Matches), the album features twelve relentless tracks of balls-to-the-wall, infectious non-stop pop-punk.
Avoiding the sophomore slump like it was the plague, Set Your Goals come out guns-a-blazing on This Will Be The Death Of Us, the follow-up to their fan-coveted debut Mutiny. From the galloping drum beat and the ripping riffs of the title track, which features guest vocals from Vinnie Caruana from I Am the Avalanche, to the soaring choruses of the catchy sing-along “look closer“ and the blazing punk rock track “the fallen,” which showcases duel vocalists Matt Wilson and Jordan Brown’s flawless delivery as they trade off singing duties, This Will Be The Death Of Us is the album fans were waiting on.
While This Will Be The Death Of Us has the definitive Set Your Goals sound, they aren’t afraid to keep it fresh and try new things. For example, “gaia bleeds (make way for man)” takes things to a whole new level with Audelio Flores and Dan Coddaire’s Motorhead-ish riffs and Mike Ambrose’s tightly knit blast beats over gang vocals, and the soon to be fan favorite “the few that remain,” an insanely addictive song that features longtime Set Your Goals fan Haley Williams of Paramore adding some gutsy vocals. The band finishes off the album with the 90’s skate punk influenced “our ethos: a legacy to pass on,” featuring spitfire, fist-pumping guest vocals from New Found Glory’s Chad Gilbert.
This may only be the band’s second album, but you wouldn’t know it. Set Your Goals has already proven their longevity and dedication to the music through relentless touring and their classic debut Mutiny, and with the release of This Will Be The Death Of Us it further cements them as one of the pop-punk greats.
Catch the band this summer on their co-headlining tour with Four Year Strong!
